Gabriela, EVS in Bosnia and Herzegovina

I will keep repeating that, despite the difficulties and inconveniences, the year spent in Bosnia as an EVS volunteer was both the best year and a choice in my life. After a few months spent in the corporation, I got into a project in the Balkans. There I met exceptional people who will stay in my life for years, I lived in my beloved region, I had a chance to learn the beautiful local language almost tangibly, and together with other volunteers – because without the support of the center’s manager – we tried to run a youth center, do something useful and pleasant for the local community.
Soon after the end of the project I left Poland again, which could somehow be described as a continuation of the project, because in fact I am still in suspension between EVS and „real life”.

What did I learn from the project? Nothing is black or white, but still you have to try to do something good for others. For a happy life you don’t need a closet full of clothes, and the end of the month and the upcoming lack of money wakes up our culinary creativity.
Earlier I read about minimalism, in Bosnia I started to experience it – consciously, but also because of a situation that most volunteers probably got to know. And this is very beautiful!

I’m still looking for „the right” and „the only” career path, but I’m sure that knowing another foreign language broadens the scope for maneuvering. In fact, I would like to open a hostel in Bosnia with my most wonderful co-volunteer, Agnieszka. And teach the local community an ecological approach to waste.

GO TO EVS – YOU WON’T REGRET IT! And even if something goes wrong as you expected, it’s still worth it.
